THE ORCHARD CORE

WELCOME TO THE ORCHARD CORE

On March 13th, 2023, The Orchard Core launched during the Winterm course Producing Pulitzers with Mrs. Brady, Mr. Layne, and Ms. Niemeyer.

The Orchard Core is a media house entirely run by Orchard middle school students. They are responsible for ALL of the writing, editing, photography, storyboarding, and content creation. Whenever you see an Orchard story or post with the tag "The Orchard Core" that’s all student's voices.

Producing Pulitzers is focused on all of the different angles of media and journalism. Students have learned from experts in the fields of journalism, film, and TV and radio broadcasting by visiting their campuses and by inviting them into our classroom as guest speakers. Field trips include trips to a few local businesses to practice write-ups about their businesses and products, and also to a college campus to learn about majoring in journalism from professors and students. Our class will culminate in students creating content to be shared with the Orchard community on its social media and student section of the website.

  • WHAT IS WINTERM?

Winterm is a two-week intensive class that meets in March where students study a topic of passion or strong curiosity. Rather than a superficial exploration, this model allows for great depth of study and understanding. This two-week intensive term is known as Winterm. During Winterm, students engage in one mixed-grade course which will go in-depth into a unit or field of study.

One of the biggest benefits of an intensive class at a progressive school is students choose their Winterm course based on personal interest. This allows students the opportunity to run with an academic topic, which also fuels a personal passion. In this atmosphere, students are excited to pursue more information and dive deep into the curriculum. It is a pure celebration of learning within a group of students who share a similar interest. Examples of Winterm courses: a musical production; Cook Healthy, Eat Local; Business Leadership in the Next Generation; Marsville: Colonizing the Red Planet; Creative Writing and Illustrating; and Slot Car Racing.

  • ORCHARD CORE'S NIFTY NEWS

Written, scripted, and recorded by: Phoenix (8th grade) and Martha-Clarie (8th grade)

    Edited by: Phoenix (8th grade)

This week we started Nifty News at The Orchard School through our Orchard Core section of the website. In this first series, we showed a different clip from each day. On Monday we toured Liam and Walter’s locker, as well as Ms. Nicole McHugh’s office. Tuesday was “Pi day - 3/14” so we had some fun by pie-ing people in the face if they got questions wrong. On Wednesday, Ms. Jenna Niemeyer explained the recent sixth-grade poetry project to us. We closed out the week by going around the school and saying what our favorite part about each middle school classroom was. We hope you enjoy our “show” and we will see you on the next episode of Nifty News by The Orchard Core.

    RANDOM ACT OF "HUGNESS"
Written, filmed, and edited by: Isabel (8th grade) and Mae (8th grade)

The Orchard School is filled with kindness inside and out. But who couldn’t use some more? That's why we created “A Random Act of Hugness.” We enjoyed going up to teachers and students in the hallways and brightening up their day.

Although we got a lot of hugs, there were a few kids who refused. There were 37 positive reactions and five negative ones. The fun thing about “A Random Act of Hugness” is some of these kids we’d never met before, but now there will be another familiar face in the school.

TRICK SHOTS FROM ORCHARD BASKETBALL PLAYERS
Filmed and edited by: Luca (7th grade) Satyam (6th grade)

We are Owls on the basketball team here at The Orchard School. Our favorite thing to do is play basketball and while we usually practice real drills, we decided to do some trickshots to switch it up. We hope you enjoy it.
