Celebrating a centennial this year, The Orchard School is an independent Progressive school that has established its identity as an institution of learning and wonder that develops and educates the whole child. As part of this historic celebration, Orchard is excited to host Indy’s first Symposium for Progressive Teaching and Learning.
During this two-day event, coordinated by Orchard teachers Caroline Glowacki and Suellen Sharp, attendees will walk away with valuable resources. “Our hope is that this symposium will ignite new ideas, strengthen Indiana connections, and offer a central place for educators to refine their craft through Progressive education,” Glowacki and Sharp said.
SATURDAY, SEPT. 17: RICHARD LOUV @ THE TOBIAS THEATER
On Saturday, Sept. 17th at 7 p.m., the entire Indianapolis community is invited to the Tobias Theater at Newfields to hear a special keynote address by international best-selling author Richard Louv. Best known for his book Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder, Louv is also the co-founder of The Children & Nature Network.
SUNDAY, SEPT. 18TH: CONFERENCE FOR EDUCATORS

Sunday, Sept. 18th, preschool through grade 12 teachers are invited to the Conference for Educators on Orchard’s 43-acre wooded campus. The Sunday conference will begin with a keynote address by
Jill L. English, Child Advocates Chief of Community Equity and Inclusion. The afternoon workshops that follow will be based on Orchard’s Four Pillars: Outdoor Education; Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; Social-Emotional Learning; and Hands-on Learning.
Head of School Sherri C. Helvie, Ph.D. has been working on the Symposium for a few years now and is eager to connect with and learn from fellow educators around the city.
“Teachers are the front-line researchers and practitioners who bring best practices to life for children,” Helvie said. “The Symposium allows us to build and extend the network of Progressive educators across Central Indiana.”
