Custodian – Night Shift

The Position
Provides custodial services to the school’s building after school hours and during the evening/night, cleaning restrooms, business/administration offices and restroom, and the cafeterias. Ensures that the building spaces overall are neat/tidy and fit for use by teachers, students, and staff. Primary responsibility for daily thorough cleaning of the building facilities. Assists with event set-up, takedown, and cleanup as needed. Assists with light maintenance services as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides regular and routine custodial services, inclusive of emptying trash as needed, restocking restrooms, maintaining the main entrance, cleaning windows, vacuuming, mopping and light dusting. Spot cleaning spills and handling other custodial requests as needed.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, and refinish floors; clean, dust and polish furniture; wash windows and walls; clean restrooms; dispose of rubbish, change lights, etc.; make certain all areas of the building are kept in a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition according to industry and/or school standards
- Apply cleaning chemicals according to established safety procedures
- Adhere to safety measures for cleaning, lifting, moving, and operating equipment
- Perform minor repair and maintenance as authorized by facilities manager
- Provides support to building activities such as pageants, graduation, assemblies, and facilities rentals; works closely with facilities manager on organizing evening/after school activities, assuring appropriate custodial support
- Provides service for various events conducted in and around the school, including setting up tables and chairs, transporting food and drink from the kitchen to the event at the direction of the caterer, tearing down equipment and cleaning up immediately following the event.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides safety and security measures for students, staff, and visitors relative to conditions within the building.
- Meets, greets, and provides prompt and friendly customer service to parents and visitors, as required.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Physical Demands
- Talking, listening, and vision
- Mobility to roam 155,000 square foot building and hand dexterity to utilize various maintenance tools
- Accessing file cabinets, printers, and copiers
- Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Working knowledge of software e-mail systems and ability to utilize Orchard’s computers
- Must protect confidential information and establish credibility
- Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to get along with diverse personalities, must exhibit tact, and be able to exhibit flexible behavior
- Judgment that is consistent with standards, practices, procedures, regulation or governmental law while recognizing and supporting the organization’s preferences and priorities
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and make recommendations to management
Required Qualifications and Attributes
- At least two years of experience in providing custodial services in a similarly sized and institutional building.
- Must possess a valid and current Indiana driver’s license, to utilize Orchard School vehicles as needed.
- Must be able to read and understand such things as curriculums, purchase orders, instructions, weekly calendars, policies, and schedules, written in English.
