Día de los Muertos and Diwali Celebrations Led by Orchard Students
Last week, our community came together to celebrate Día de los Muertos and Diwali, showcasing the rich cultural traditions that make Orchard so special. By engaging with these celebrations, we recognize and respect the diversity that enriches our school community.
Our 8th-grade Owls kicked things off with a presentation on Día de los Muertos, which honors and remembers loved ones who have passed away. They showed and narrated a video about the ofrenda and invited students to add an item to honor a family member. Following this, families representing multiple grade-levels shared their Diwali celebrations through a personalized slideshow, where students spoke about the traditions that are significant to them and their families. These families brought the festivities to life with a lively Garba dance, inviting students and teachers to join in the fun. We also enjoyed an energetic Bhangra performance led by the talented Anita Lerche, an Orchard parent and Grammy Award winner, who encouraged everyone to dance along—the gym was hopping!
In the front lobby, families set up a colorful Diwali display featuring diyas, rangoli, Diwali books, and beautiful Indian attire. Our students loved decorating their diyas and learning about their significance as symbols of light conquering darkness. For Día de los Muertos, students also created a large ofrenda (altar or shrine) in the Center to honor and remember their loved ones.
